It is with profound sadness that Operative Experience mourns the passing of its founder and guiding force, Dr. Robert F. Buckman, Jr., M.D. His life’s work was built on a clear conviction: better training saves lives. That belief transformed how surgeons and medical professionals prepare for the moments that matter most, and it continues to shape our mission today.
A Distinguished Career in Surgery and Trauma
Dr. Buckman was an internationally recognized surgeon, educator, and inventor whose career spanned decades at the highest levels of American medicine. A graduate of Duke University School of Medicine, he completed training at Johns Hopkins University and Rutgers Health/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School before serving as a full professor of surgery at Temple University School of Medicine. He also directed Philadelphia’s busiest trauma center for fifteen years, earning wide recognition for both clinical excellence and surgical teaching.
His service extended beyond the hospital. In the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps, he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, served in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm with the 300th Field Hospital, and spent three years as a researcher at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Across his career, he authored or co-authored approximately 100 surgical publications, held 15 United States patents, served as editor-in-chief of Trauma Quarterly, examined for the American Board of Surgery, and lectured at leading medical institutions in the United States and abroad.
Founding Operative Experience, Inc.
Dr. Buckman founded Operative Experience on the belief that improved patient outcomes require a fundamental advance in how practitioners learn. He championed realistic, hands-on surgical training using the same instruments and decision-making pressures clinicians face in real practice. In 2016, he joined forces with healthcare simulation pioneer, Lou Oberndorf, to build the industry partnership needed to manufacture, distribute, and scale his medical simulators professionally. That collaboration became the foundation of Operative Experience as it exists today, serving the Department of Defense, hospitals, EMS providers, and medical and nursing schools worldwide.
A Legacy That Lives On
Dr. Buckman’s influence is embedded in every simulator Operative Experience produces. His insistence on anatomical accuracy, clinical realism, and scenario-based adaptability established the design principles behind the company’s product line, from trauma care simulators used in combat theaters and training centers around the world, to obstetrics simulators such as RealMom and C-Celia that support care teams in delivery settings. His legacy lives on in every practitioner trained through this technology and in every patient who benefits from better preparation.
Dr. Buckman was a physician, inventor, soldier, teacher, and innovator. Above all, he was a man devoted to saving lives. The entire Operative Experience family extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and we are honored to carry his mission forward.
