Empowering the Air National Guard with Tactical Casualty Care Pro Simulators
As modern warfare and operational roles evolve, the U.S. Department of Defense has taken a significant step towards advancing medical training across 90 Air National Guard (ANG) sites by procuring Tactical Casualty Care Pro Series (TCCS Pro) simulators from Operative Experience (OEI). This groundbreaking move is designed to enhance casualty trauma care, preparing personnel for medical emergencies through high-fidelity simulation.
The Importance of High-Fidelity Simulators in Combat Scenarios
High-fidelity simulators, such as the TCCS Pro, have become indispensable in Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC). By replicating real-life combat conditions, including stress-induced environments, these simulators substantially boost the preparedness of medics and service members. The realistic scenarios ensure that medical personnel can hone their skills, leading to higher survival rates among wounded service members and enhancing operational efficiency during missions.
Bridging the Gap in Gender-Specific Combat Trauma Training
Historically, military training often overlooked the necessity for gender-specific training scenarios despite women constituting nearly 19% of U.S. military personnel. Notably, studies show that female soldiers experience a considerably higher case fatality rate in combat, marked at 36%, compared to 17% for male soldiers. This alarming disparity highlights the urgent need for inclusive training tools.
The introduction of anatomically correct female simulators into TCCC training promises to bridge this gap. Operative Experience’s lifelike female trauma simulators offer unprecedented realism—both anatomically and physiologically—ensuring medical personnel are better prepared to treat injuries specific to female soldiers. Such inclusivity in training is expected to significantly reduce female combatant fatality rates and sharpen competency in handling diverse emergency scenarios.
Innovative Features of the TCCS Pro Simulators: A Technological Overview
OEI’s TCCS Pro and its sister simulator, Prolonged Casualty Care Pro Simulator (PCCS Pro), are the only high-fidelity simulators on the market to offer complete TCCC and PFC casualty care training. Other unique features of TCCS include OEI’s Smart Limb technology with interchangeable limbs and wounds, high-fidelity human responses (independently blinking eyes, airway complications, pulsatile and venous bleeding from multiple wound sites) and a life identical circulatory system. This capability allows modularity of the “healthy” mannequin to a variety of injury patterns to vary training evaluation iterations and achieve specific mechanisms of injury. The ruggedized, high-fidelity aspects allow for a single TCCS Pro to be utilized through the continuum of care from point-of-injury through enroute care to arrival at the military treatment facility.

OEI developed its TCCS simulators under a Small Business Innovation Research grant created to engage vendors in building a better patient simulator solution for the Department of Defense. The TCCS Pro follows protocol for Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), utilizing the MARCH algorithm to prioritize triage and treatment necessary to saving lives on the battlefield: massive hemorrhage, airway compromise, respiratory distress, circulation, and hypothermia.
OEI partnered with defense industry supplier, ADS Inc. to help procure and fulfill the rollout of the program for the ANG.
