OEI is committed to using its technology to reduce mortality rates in third world countries. As a recipient of an award through the USAID’s “Saving Lives at Birth” Program, OEI’s training systems will be used to reduce the 150,000 annual deaths that occur during childbirth. It is estimated that 30% of the deaths result from obstructed labor, as midwives are ill equipped and untrained to perform simple caesarian sections. OEI will deliver c-section training on fully operative, anatomically correct, simulated pregnant women with obstructed labor, and provide the basic instruments needed to perform the surgery. OEI has committed to provide this training at cost as part of our commitment to providing humanitarian aid. The obstructed labor simulator training will be tested in the United States, and validation through studies in Africa prior to deployment.
We hope to save 45,000 women and 45,000 newborns each year.
